Insulated Storage Tank Fabrication & Erection

Fabrication, insulation and craned erection of a large vertical storage tank, executed as a night lift to work around the site's daytime operations.

Crane lifting a large insulated and clad cylindrical storage tank at night while the site team observes

Scope#

Complete fabrication of a large vertical storage tank, insulated and clad before erection, then lifted and set as a single assembly.

Insulating and cladding at ground level rather than at height is the decision that shapes this kind of job. It removes most of the working-at-height exposure from the insulation scope, gives the crew proper access to the vapour barrier and the terminations, and moves the quality check to a point where a defect can still be corrected easily.

The cost is that the lift becomes more delicate — a clad assembly cannot be slung anywhere convenient, and the rigging has to be planned so the finish arrives intact.

Execution#

The lift was carried out at night, when site traffic and adjacent operations were at their lowest. Night lifting brings its own requirements: lighting to a standard where the rigging team can actually see the load, a tighter exclusion zone, and a briefing that assumes nobody improvises in the dark.

Result#

The tank was set, connected and handed over with the insulation system intact and inspected before erection rather than after.
