Hospital engineering is ordinary engineering under unusual constraints. The building next door to your work is treating patients. Noise, dust, vibration and infection control are not soft considerations — they set the programme.

Working in a live facility#

A hospital project is planned backwards from the constraints:

Infection control. Dust barriers, negative-pressure enclosures and agreed transit routes, set up before the first fixing is drilled and audited while the work runs.

Phasing. Departments hand over in pieces so services keep running. That means more mobilisations and tighter sequencing than a greenfield site.

Isolation. Every shutdown of gas, power or water is scheduled with clinical staff, not around them.

Noise. Some work simply cannot happen next to an occupied ward during the day, and pretending otherwise wastes everyone's programme.

Documentation#

Clinical estates teams inherit whatever record we leave behind. Test certificates, as-installed drawings, material traceability and commissioning data are compiled as the work proceeds rather than reconstructed at the end.
