Lead Lining & Radiation Shielding

Shielding is a specified quantity#

A shielded room is not "lined with lead". It is lined with a specific lead equivalence, at specific locations, derived by a radiation physicist from the equipment, the workload and the occupancy of every adjacent space — including the floor above and the floor below.

MAGWHIRL installs to that specification and documents what was installed, because the installation record is what the regulator asks for.

The detail that fails inspection#

The lead sheet itself is rarely the problem. What fails is the continuity around it:

• Joints that butt rather than lap
• Fixings driven straight through the shielding with no backing patch
• Service penetrations — conduit, ducting, sockets — cut after lining and never made good
• Door frames and viewing-window surrounds where the shielding stops at the opening instead of overlapping it
• The gap above a suspended ceiling, where a wall that reads as shielded stops at head height

Every one of those is invisible once the room is finished and expensive once the survey finds it.

Sequence and handover#

We coordinate with the electrical and HVAC trades before lining, so penetrations are formed rather than cut. Photographic records are taken before the surfaces are closed up, and the material certificates and as-installed drawings are handed over as a package for the commissioning survey.
